The Challenge

The Harsh Reality for Truck Drivers:

Truck driving in India is one of the most demanding professions. Drivers spend days or weeks away from their families, driving long hours on highways with varying road conditions. Their families back home constantly worry about their safety, with no way to know their location or well-being. When accidents or breakdowns occur, family members are often the last to know.

Financial insecurity is another major concern. Most drivers work for fleet owners or logistics companies with fixed salaries and limited recognition for safe driving practices. There’s no incentive system rewarding drivers who consistently maintain safety standards, drive responsibly, and take care of their vehicles. Good driving behavior goes unrecognized and unrewarded.

Safety Challenges:

Overspeeding is a critical safety issue on Indian highways. The Need:

We developed HumSafer (meaning “fellow traveler” or “companion”) - a comprehensive mobile application designed specifically for truck drivers in India. The app combines safety monitoring, family connectivity, rewards for safe driving, and driver recognition in a single, easy-to-use platform available in Hindi and regional languages.

Points-Based Rewards System

Native Android Development: Built entirely in Kotlin and Java, the app leverages Android’s native capabilities for optimal performance. The native approach ensures smooth background operation during long driving hours, efficient battery management crucial for all-day use, and access to device sensors for accurate driving behavior detection.

Realm Database: We chose Realm for local data storage, enabling the app to function reliably even when network connectivity is intermittent on highways. Trip data, points, and safety alerts are stored locally and synced to the cloud when connectivity is available. This offline-first approach ensures drivers never lose data due to network issues.

Firebase Integration: Firebase provides real-time database capabilities for live location sharing, cloud messaging for instant alerts and notifications, analytics to understand app usage and improve features, and crash reporting for maintaining app stability.

Location & Sensor Processing: Advanced GPS tracking with optimized battery usage, accelerometer and gyroscope data for detecting harsh braking/acceleration, speed calculation and monitoring, and route tracking and recording. The app uses sophisticated algorithms to detect actual driving vs. other vehicle movement (like being a passenger), ensuring points are earned only for actual truck driving.

Fastlane Deployment: We implemented Fastlane for automated build and deployment processes, ensuring quick updates, beta testing capabilities, and smooth release management for continuous improvements based on driver feedback.

Background Processing: The app runs efficiently in the background throughout long journeys, maintaining minimal battery impact. Advanced power management ensures the app doesn’t drain the phone battery even during 12-16 hour driving days.
