Ashok Traders, established in 1980 in Pune, grew from an agricultural business into one of Pune’s largest dealers for Kirloskar, Havells, Eicher, and other industrial pump brands. With 45 years of expertise serving residential, commercial, and industrial sectors across Pune, they faced operational challenges that limited their growth and customer satisfaction.
Service Request Management Chaos:
Customer service calls came in randomly throughout the day with no organized system. Technicians were dispatched manually through phone calls, leading to miscommunication and delays. There was no record of pump details, service history, or customer information, requiring technicians to gather information from scratch on every visit. Peak seasons saw missed calls and lost business opportunities.
Technician Coordination Problems:
Field technicians received job assignments verbally over calls, often unclear about exact locations or pump issues. No visibility into which technician was available or closest to a service location meant inefficient routing. Technicians couldn’t update job status in real-time, leaving office staff and customers in the dark. Work history and performance tracking was manual and unreliable.
Customer Experience Gaps:
Customers had to make phone calls during business hours to request service, with no 24/7 booking option. No way to track technician arrival or service progress created frustration. Repeat customers had to explain their pump details every time they called. No organized complaint system meant issues often went unresolved or untracked.
Business Inefficiency:
Without data on service frequency, common issues, or customer behavior, business decisions were based on gut feeling. Manual paperwork for service jobs, complaints, and billing was time-consuming and error-prone. Difficult to scale operations without systematic processes and visibility.
The Vision:
Ashok Traders needed a digital platform that would streamline the entire service workflow, improve customer experience, empower technicians with better tools, and provide business insights for growth.
We developed two native Android applications working together as a complete field service ecosystem.
Customer App - Service On Your Fingertips
The customer app puts pump repair service literally in customers’ hands. Users register their pumps with details like type (borewell, swimming pool, domestic water, pressure pump, drinking water), brand, age, and location. When a pump issue occurs, they open the app, select the affected pump, choose the issue type (flow problem, leakage, automatic not working, noise, etc.), set priority level, and attach photos if needed. The service request is created instantly and routed to available technicians.
Customers can track their service history, view all registered pumps in one place, and access their complaint history with resolution status. The interface is clean and straightforward - even non-tech-savvy customers can book service in under a minute.
Technician/Admin App - Field Operations Command Center
The technician app transforms how field staff manages their workload. Technicians see all assigned complaints on their dashboard with complete details: customer name, location, pump type, issue description, and priority level. They can view complaint details, customer contact information, navigate to the location via integrated maps, and update job status in real-time.
The calendar view shows scheduled site visits and work history. Technicians can view their completed jobs, track performance metrics, and manage their profiles. For administrators, the app provides oversight of all open complaints, technician assignments, and business operations.
Integrated Features:
Building separate apps for customers and technicians required a unified backend architecture that keeps both synchronized in real-time.
Native Android Development: We chose native Android to deliver optimal performance, smooth animations, and tight integration with device features like camera, GPS, and notifications. Native development ensures the apps work flawlessly across various Android devices popular in Pune’s market.
Real-Time Backend: Node.js with Express powers the backend API, handling service requests, technician assignments, and real-time updates. MongoDB stores customer data, pump registrations, service history, and complaint records. Firebase provides real-time synchronization - when a customer books service, technicians see it instantly; when technicians update status, customers are notified immediately.
Location Services: Google Maps API integration enables accurate location tagging for service addresses, technician navigation to customer sites, and distance-based technician assignment for efficient routing.
Smart Notifications: Firebase Cloud Messaging delivers push notifications for complaint assignments to technicians, status updates to customers, and priority alerts for urgent jobs. Notifications work reliably even when apps are closed, ensuring no missed service requests.
Performance Optimizations: Image compression for uploaded pump photos keeps bandwidth usage low, offline capability allows technicians to view job details even in areas with poor connectivity, and efficient data caching reduces load times and data consumption.
